Support for students currently enrolled at Tufts University, students enrolled at all colleges in the Boston area (including those Universities in the Boston Consortium) AND college-aged students who want to get back on a college track!

We provide on-campus care and support for college students struggling with mental health and substance use disorders so they can remain engaged in a successful and safe college experience. We keep students in college, and help those whose academic studies have been interrupted due to mental health and substance use disorders, Get Back on a College Track.

The Haven Outpatient Treatment Center

The Haven at College Outpatient Center, in collaboration with Tufts University, is conveniently located within walking distance from Tufts University at 200 Boston Ave, Medford. For students from other Boston Universities, the Haven Outpatient Center is easily accessible by Subway (Davis Square on the Red Line), Commuter Rail (West Medford on the Lowell Line) and Bus (#94 if coming from Davis Square, #96 if coming from Harvard Square, #80 if coming from Lechmere). Our student-centric program integrates co-occurring mental health and substance use treatment with on-campus community engagement to support students’ college lifestyles. Our licensed clinicians facilitate strength-based Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Outpatient (OP) programs that empower and increase student capacity for personal agency, responsibility and accountability.
Haven Outpatient Center Programs use both conventional and complementary evidence-based treatments including Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) within an integrative system of relationships with like-minded students. We include comprehensive care to increase personal resiliency and set and meet personal and academic goals. We also offer Family Support, Adjunctive Mental Health Services and Academic Coaching as needed and parents are encouraged to participate in family therapy with their student. Outpatient Treatment programs are covered by most health insurance.

The Haven Recovery Residence

Comfortable and convenient, The Haven Recovery Residence in Collaboration with Tufts is located in a University owned residence close to campus and other Tufts Special Interest House. Haven residents share furnished bedrooms with same-sex roommates, helping each other navigate sobriety while enjoying the company of their peers. There is a large backyard where substance free social events and recreational activities take place. Through weekly recovery meetings, individualized wellness sessions, group accountability, social & recreational events, the Haven’s student led community fosters long term recovery while forming lasting friendships. PEER TO PEER MENTORING & MONITORING

The Haven’s innovative Mentoring and Monitoring Program provides the tools for students, parents and school administrators to distinguish casual partying from serious substance misuse and treat accordingly. This harm-reduction program provides peer recovery mentors, (regular/randomized) drug testing, and community support for students and parents seeking answers and accountability.

THE HAVEN PROGRAM AND STAFF

Our local Haven team includes licensed clinicians, peer recovery coaches and individuals who are passionate about helping college students receive care and support for their mental health and substance use challenges.

Larry Berger, M.A., LMHC, LADC 1

CLINICAL DIRECTOR

Larry is the Clinical Director of The Haven Outpatient Center in Collaboration with Tufts University. Larry brings a passion for helping people and years of clinical and administrative experience delivering empirically supported care to individuals with co-occurring substance use disorder and mental health issues. He holds an M.A. in Addiction and Mental Health Counseling from Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies and a B.A. from Brandeis University. Larry is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the State of Massachuttes and has experience working in both Inpatient Residential and Outpatient Treatment settings at several facilities treating Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health Disorders. Larry has also been an Adjunct Professor at Cape Cod Community College.

Paige Estabrooks, MPH

Student Care Manager

Paige is an experienced Practice Manager with deep experience working in the hospital & health care industry. Prior to joining the Haven team, Paige oversaw the day-to-day performance and operations of a Substance Use Disorder and dual-diagnosis program for young adults with substance use related issues at one of Boston’s premiere hospitals. She brings a strong consulting background to The Haven at College with an M.S. in Public Health from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and a B.A. from Colby-Sawyer College.

ORIANA FEDERICO, LICSW

Program Director and Clinician

Oriana is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with deep experience treating young adults with a range of substance use disorder and mental health disorder diagnoses using evidence-based treatment modalities. Before joining The Haven at College team, Oriana worked at one of Boston’s premiere SUD and Dual Diagnosis hospital programs for young adults providing short-term and long-term individual therapy, extensive psychosocial evaluations and treatment recommendations for patients between the ages of 14-26. Oriana holds an MSW from Columbia University and a B.A. in Women’s Studies from Wheaton College and has completed intensive training in Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) and Tobacco Education (BSAS).

Chris Hayes, B.A., Master's Candidate, The Fletcher School at Tufts University

House Manager and Community Leader

Following ten years in the workforce, including experience as a Senior Research Analyst with United Health Group, Chris is extending his academic journey as a Master’s Candidate at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Chris’s interest at Fletcher revolves around the growth of China in the last decade, and what sorts of opportunities for synergy that will provide for China and its neighbors- and the populations therein. As a person in long-term recovery, Chris leads the Haven Community “meeting students where they’re at” and helping them find recovery while engaged in a meaningful and vibrant college experience.
